Digital X-Rays

X-rays allow dentists to see what is happening beneath the visible oral tissues. Diseases of the teeth and other areas of the mouth cannot be seen when your dentist examines you. X-rays may reveal such things as decay between your teeth and periodontal (gum) disease.

Radiation from these x-rays is extremely low. They pose a much smaller risk than leaving dental problems left undetected and untreated.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer strikes an estimated 34,350 Americans each year. Of those Americans, more than 25% will die from the disease. The best way to prevent oral cancer is to avoid tobacco and alcohol. Seeing your dentist regularly for thorough exams is also key. At our office, we have technology that can detect oral cancer early, before any visible sore or lesion appears in the mouth.

The device we use is called the VELscope Oral Cancer Screening System, and the exam performed is extremely quick and painless. Your dental professional will simply shine the blue excitation light into your mouth, to possibly reveal precancerous and cancerous tissue that may not be apparent to the naked eye.

If abnormalities are detected, your dentist will discuss them with you and you may need to come back for a follow-up visit. In most cases, VELscope will indicate that there are no problems, but in the instance of a suspicious finding, know that you will be referred appropriately.
